The first apps, FAMI: Shoulder and FAMI: Hip, are now available in the Apple app store. Apps for the knee, elbow, back & abdomen, ankle & foot, wrist & hand, and head & neck will also launch soon.
The app series features Primal Pictures' award-winning 3D anatomy imagery, along with content collaboratively developed by Stephanie P. Marango, MD, RYT; Carrie McCulloch, MD; Matt McCulloch, BFA; and, Jeffrey T. Laitman, PhD, FAAA. In conjunction with their internationally renowned FAMI Workshop, this team developed the FAMI app series to provide clinical education to movement professionals seeking a greater knowledge of anatomy, movement and injuries.
"A wide range of fitness professionals, physical therapists and health practitioners are being relied upon for health maintenance and injury rehabilitation and they need to be more knowledgeable than ever about the human body," says Dr. Marango, lead author of the series. "Our collaborative team of physicians, anatomists and fitness professionals are in a unique position of understanding and responding to this need. With this app, we merge the medical and movement worlds in a way that is practical, integrative, and hands-on."
Each app is touch screen enabled, allowing users to rotate anatomy views and add or remove anatomical layers, all with the swipe of a finger. In addition to a region's anatomy (e.g. shoulder), users can also explore its principles of movement, including joint specific movements (e.g. flexion, extension) enlivened with exercise examples (e.g. yoga, Pilates, weight-training). The content is further contextualized with Clinical Correlates (e.g. rotator cuff injury), which feature medical images (e.g. MRI) and exercise recommendations.
"Primal Pictures is excited to expand our line of educational tools to provide a needed educational resource for fitness instructors, physical therapists, fitness enthusiasts and others," said Pippa Chadfield, Head of Anatomy at Primal Pictures. "We have also heard from many physicians that the app is an invaluable patient education tool to explain specific joint injuries and therapeutic recovery plans." Primal Pictures developed its 3D imagery using medical scan data to create a highly detailed and accurate model that showcases the interrelations of body systems. Primal Pictures' range of 3D human anatomy titles are used by more than 500,000 students and 70,000 educators at over 700 colleges and universities around the world.
Each app in the Functional Anatomy for Movement & Injuries series is $14.99. For more information, contact info@primalpictures.com.
