ProLogis to Build Its U.K. Industrial Space According to BREEAM Environmental Standards
BIRMINGHAM, England, April 1, 2008 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- ProLogis , the world's largest owner, manager and developer of distribution facilities, announced today that it will require all new industrial space in the United Kingdom to be built according to environmental standards developed by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) Group, a research, consultancy, training, testing and certification organization delivering sustainability and innovation across the real estate development industry.
Effective immediately, all new ProLogis facilities currently in the design or planning stage, as well as projects going forward, must achieve a minimum rating of Very Good under the BRE Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM), the UK's national standard for best practice in sustainable development and environmental performance.
The BREEAM rating scale includes Pass, Good, Very Good and Excellent. Points are determined by measuring the impact the facility has on the environment and the employees working within it.
"Today's announcement is a continued demonstration of our commitment to sustainable warehouse construction," said Jack Rizzo, head of global construction for ProLogis. "Earlier this year we detailed our plans to build all of our U.S. warehouse space according to nationally-accepted green building standards, so we are extremely pleased to now be implementing a similar program outside the United States. We are eager to continue expanding our sustainable development plans on a worldwide basis, and delivering the most sought-after distribution space on the market."
So far, ProLogis has developed eight BREEAM-rated distribution centers comprising more than 3.1 million square feet at locations throughout the U.K. ProLogis has also started construction on a ninth facility, totaling 535,000 square feet, which will be located at ProLogis Park Sideway and is targeted for BREEAM Excellent.
"Developing high performance buildings benefits all of our key stakeholders -- from our customers to our investors and the communities in which we operate," said Maurice Dalton, senior vice president and regional head of construction for ProLogis in the U.K. "ProLogis has been a frontrunner in this regard, and has utilized the same high-quality building specifications in the U.K. since mid-2006. Depending on customer demand, we have the potential to retroactively achieve BREEAM ratings for another 2 million square feet of existing distribution space."
ProLogis is the United Kingdom's largest provider of industrial distribution facilities, with more than 18.6 million square feet (1.72 million square meters) of industrial space owned, managed and under development, as of December 31, 2007. Current ProLogis customers in the region include ASOS.com, Bosch-Siemens, The Co-operative Group, GEFCO, Honda Logistics, Pirelli, Sainsbury's, Screwfix, Superdrug and Tesco.
