Renesas Technology Announces Highly-Integrated, Secure ePOS Platform With 32-bit Performance at Cartes Show in Paris, November 15-17

-- The Enhanced Reference Design With a Higher-Performance Microcontroller Provides a Flexible Turnkey Solution That Lets Terminal Manufacturers Create Complete Payment Transaction Systems at the Lowest Cost Possible

Renesas Technology Corp., the world's number-one supplier ofmicrocontrollers (MCUs) and a leader in security IC products, todayannounced that it will unveil a highly integrated, more powerfulversion of its turnkey electronic point-of-sale (ePOS) referenceplatform, the ePOS-2, in the Renesas booth (#3B001) at the Cartes showin Paris, France, November 15-17.

Manufacturers of ePOS equipment can use the flexible securedsolution to develop multiple types of payment transaction systems,including electronic-fund-transfer point-of-sale (EFTPOS) terminals,add-on electronic cash register (ECR) readers, and PC-connectedreaders. The Renesas ePOS-2 platform lets them easily customize andupdate systems, while reducing engineering, maintenance and ownershipcosts. It also supports many major open-software standards, includingGlobalPlatform/STIP and JEFF from J-Consortium, to ensure compliancewith the latest security standards. Built upon a trusted securityenvironment that incorporates proven smart card technology, theindustry-compliant tamperproof hardware provides security accelerationand robust anti-slamming control functions.

The ePOS-2 platform is based on a powerful, mass-produced 32-bitH8SX/1653F MCU to complete the line of products including the 16-bitchip used in the previous design. Moreover, the new platform deliversenhanced security, using the latest Renesas security co-processor tomeet standards requirements.

The ePOS-2 is a fully integrated solution. The platform includesEMV (Europay/Mastercard/Visa) compliant smart card readers, has athree-track magnetic stripe capability to support legacy technologiesand local/regional requirements, and provides an expanded printerfunctionality to support different fonts, such as Asian characters.Also, it supports full LAN/Ethernet communication, a modem with aTCP/IP communication module, and USB to accommodate a wider range ofconnection choices and options. To enable next-generation high-endterminals and applications, various add-on features are available,such as Visa Smart POS support and others for biometric inputs andcontactless implementations.

Modular Architecture Provides Design Flexibility

A modular architecture gives the ePOS-2 platform considerabledesign flexibility -- unlike ASIC implementations, for which changesare expensive and time consuming. According to Sami Nassar, generalmanager, advanced solutions group, Renesas Technology America, Inc.,"With the Renesas platform, ePOS manufacturers can cost effectivelydevelop a wide range of production-ready terminals with provensecurity. For versatility and to minimize system cost, many 'musthave' circuit elements are built into the H8SX/1653F MCU."
