Rocklin Academy Charter Schools Releases Recommendations Regarding Literature Selection Policy and Discrimination Prevention
ROCKLIN, Calif., Sept. 15, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Today the Rocklin Academy Charter Schools released recommendations to its Board of Directors on its literature selection policy and discrimination prevention.
The recommendations respond to complaints raised by parents at Rocklin Academy's Gateway campus regarding a kindergarten teacher reading a book at the request of a student on gender identity. The recommendations will be formally presented to the Board at its September 18 meeting in Rocklin, Calif. The recommendations can be found here.
"Rocklin Academy's schools are some of the highest performing in California. This success is achieved by the partnership between our parents, teachers and administration, and the collective commitment to provide a safe, positive learning environment for all students," said Rocklin Academy Superintendent Robin Stout.
"We have spoken with many parents and community members over the past months to understand everyone's views and find a constructive path forward. We appreciate the thought and passion behind every piece of feedback received. These recommendations reflect that input, and will help create a positive learning environment, while also fulfilling our legal obligations to protect all students from discrimination," said Stout.
California law and the state's education code require schools that receive public funding, including state Charter Schools, to extend broad protections to students against discrimination on the basis of disability, nationality, race and ethnicity, religion, gender, gender identity, gender expression and other characteristics (Education Code, Section 235). State law also requires that public school teachers take affirmative steps to foster a nondiscriminatory classroom environment. (Education Code Section 233.5(b))
