Samsung Developing Stand-Alone Smartwatches: WSJ
(RTTNews) - Samsung (SMSN.L, SSNNF.OB, SSNLF.OB) is working on a smartwatch that can make or receive calls without being connected to a mobile phone, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday.
The stand-alone smartwatch also comes with an impressive array of smartphone features; it can snap pictures, send email, and ships with GPS, Bluetooth and a heart monitor.
Samsung is already in talks with U.S., South Korea and Europe about the watch-phone, which runs on the company's Tizen operating system and comes with a SIM card. The company expects to unveil the gadget in the months of June and July.
Samsung holds the largest market share for smartphones, followed by Apple, who is widely expected to launch a smartwatch this year.
The South Korean electronics giant already has four smartwatches in the market, including Galaxy Gear and Gear 2. But these gadgets require a connection with a smartphone for calling or browsing the Internet.
Further, the company intends to use Tizen to connect its smartwatches with other electronics such as cameras, refrigerators and air conditioners.
