Shelter-in-Place Lifted
KINDERSLEY, SK, Oct. 10, 2013 /CNW/ - Officials have determined that the fire at the Kindersley landfill is sufficiently extinguished enough to lift the Shelter-in-Place advisory and scale back the emergency response effort to focus on recovery.
Monitoring of the landfill site will continue throughout the night and into tomorrow to ensure that hot spots remain suppressed and unable to reignite. Kindersley's Fire Chief has confirmed that the site is in good condition and he is confident that plans and resources are in place to ensure safety for the public.
A Shelter-in-Place was put into effect on Tuesday, October 8 to encourage residents to reduce their exposure to smoke, particularly if they reside within one kilometer of the fire or have respiratory vulnerabilities.
Smoke at the fire site has significantly diminished and there is confidence it will continue to improve.
The Local State of Emergency will remain in place so that the Town may continue to access all the Provincial resources available. The declaration naturally expires within 7 days of being put in place.
As of 3:15 pm today, a total of 106,972 gallons of water and 108 litres of foam were used to combat the landfill fire.
There are currently 49 personnel on site until the Incident Command Centre is expected to close around 9 pm this evening.
If anyone is experiencing difficulty breathing or has concerns about other symptoms related to smoke inhalation, please call Healthline at 811.
