Staples Makes Tax Deadline Day Easy for Last-Minute Filers With Free Curbside Copies of Returns; Company Stresses Importance of Keeping Hard Copies of Important Documents

"Taxpayers are hard-pressed to make the midnight filing deadlineand often, when they need to make copies the most, there isn't a copymachine handy. Staples is bringing the copiers curbside to help make ahard day easier for last-minute filers and stress the importance ofkeeping copies of tax-related forms," said John Burke, senior vicepresident of business services at Staples.

Electronic filing continues to gain in popularity - according tothe IRS, 70 percent of all returns were e-filed as of March 22,compared with 68 percent for the same period last year - but taxexperts advise keeping a hard copy on file in case of mistakes orquestions from the IRS once tax returns have been submitted.

"The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants supportselectronic filing, but we also strongly recommend keeping a hard copyof the return, worksheets, schedules, invoices and receipts for atleast three years," said Tom Ochsenschlager, vice president-taxationfor the AICPA.

Because April 15 falls on a weekend, taxpayers have a little extratime to file their 2005 returns. Most of the country will have to fileon Monday, April 17. The deadline is April 18 for taxpayers in Maine,Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Vermont and theDistrict of Columbia, because of a state holiday in Massachusettswhere the IRS has a processing facility.
