Sumitomo Electric Networks Begins Shipment of QIVICON Home Base
Sumitomo Electric Networks, Inc., a business operation unit for broadband access and IPTV equipment of Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd., announced today that it has achieved the first volume shipments of the "QIVICON Home Base” to Deutsche Telekom.
QIVICON, the platform that allows management of common in-home equipment, such as windows, lighting, and home appliances from smartphones, tablets and PC, is now being implemented and available to the market. One of the key components of this new smart home platform is the "QIVICON Home Base", developed and manufactured by Sumitomo Electric Networks.
QIVICON Home Base was designed, developed and produced in close cooperation with the QIVICON development team, and will be placed in the home between the broadband connection equipment, such as a DSL Home Gateway, and the in-home equipment like sensors and actors, to be managed. The communication with the in-home devices can be handled by various supported radio technologies.
Based on the definitions of OSGi, the new QIVICON Home Base, developed and produced by Sumitomo Electric Networks, will provide an extremely flexible and efficient communications link between a home owner and much of the common equipment found in the home. By using internet-connected device such as a smartphone, tablet or PC, a homeowner can turn lights and home appliances on and off or manage energy-consuming equipment like heating and air-conditioning, all while away from the home.
"We are very pleased that we finalised the customization and integration project, together with the QIVICON team, successfully. The new approach of an open platform with an open concept for wireless connectivity and open software layer alongside was an engineering challenge. The unique solution 'QIVICON Home Base' was achieved by a very close cooperation of our highly qualified development team with all involved technology partners," said Dr. Yasushi Kida, Managing Executive Officer of Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. "Smart/Connected Home technologies are a top priority for us, and we look forward to provide similar solutions to other customers in Europe in the near future."
The QIVICON platform will be launched at IFA 2013 and first partner products will be available shortly after the exhibition. Together with its partners EnBW, eQ-3, Miele, Samsung and Telekom QIVICON will provide a tightly integrated ecosystem for partner products, which will enable an unsurpassed user interface and experience.
Sumitomo Electric Networks is committed to the connected home concept and expects its deployment throughout the world to deliver key lifestyle technologies such as broadband access and entertainment delivery systems. The company also expects to make similar announcements in the future.
