Tekelec Selected by Rockwell Collins to Provide VoIP Call Control for U.S. Navy Aircraft Tekelec 6000 Application Server to Enable Mission-Critical Communications for U.S. Navy's E-6B Strategic Command Aircraft, U.S. Leaders
Tekelec (Nasdaq:TKLC), a leading developer of telecommunications products for next-generation fixed, mobile and packet networks, today announced it has been selected by Rockwell Collins to provide voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) capabilities for the U.S. Navy's fleet of E-6B strategic air command aircraft, which provides a critical communications link to the U.S. strategic forces.
Tekelec's market-leading hosted IP telephony application server, the Tekelec 6000, will provide the core VoIP call control function to the Intercommunications System (ICS) being developed by Rockwell Collins for upgrades to the aircraft's primary missions systems. VoIP call control enables strategic applications such as conferencing and radio channel monitoring to allow aircraft personnel to communicate quickly and securely with strategic command centers.
"Tekelec's application server is a critical component of the ICS, providing the necessary call control functionality that makes Rockwell Collins' strategic applications possible," explained Fred Lax, Tekelec's president and CEO. "The Tekelec 6000 is proven in the high-performance networks of telecommunications operators around the globe, delivering reliable, secure VoIP features and mission-critical applications. These factors were key in our selection to provide a mission-critical component of the ICS upgrades for the Navy's strategic forces."
The companies are in the development phase of a multi-year, multi-million-dollar contract to develop the ICS upgrades. In this phase, Tekelec is developing a version of Tekelec 6000 that is optimized for military deployments with specialized conferencing, new gateway and CPE interfaces, a specialized graphical user interface and enhanced VoIP features.
"The long-promised benefits of VoIP are now exploding across all industries and areas of life, allowing corporations to run more efficiently, consumers to communicate more effectively, and the military to better protect our nation and its leaders," added Lax. "Our relationship with Rockwell Collins, one of the world's leading defense contractors, shows Tekelec's leadership in delivering VoIP for mission-critical, highly-secure deployments for military and homeland security initiatives."
