The Hartford Names Dr. David Williams Medical Director of Underwriting

The Hartford has named Dr. David Williams medical director of its Individual Life Insurance division. Dr. Williams will be responsible for providing case consultation and training of the division’s 75 underwriters, who together assess nearly 80,000 life insurance applications each year. He will report to Dr. Ann Hoven, assistant vice president and chief medical director.

Dr. Williams, who is a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserve, recently returned from his third tour of duty as a physician in Iraq and Afghanistan. He previously worked at AIG American General Domestic Life Companies and at Ohio National as a vice president and medical director.

"Dr. Williams has the background and conviction to help The Hartford to continue to push the boundaries of insurance underwriting," Dr. Ann Hoven said, "so that we can provide life insurance to those who want it, as we continually reassess, innovate, and update our health and mortality assessments.”

Dr. Williams earned his bachelor of arts degree in biology at Amherst College in Amherst, Mass., and his master of business administration (management) degree from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. His doctor of medicine degree is from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He did his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at The Christ Hospital, in Cincinnati, Ohio. He is Board Certified in both internal medicine and insurance medicine and has attained the designation as a Fellow from the Life Management Institute (FLMI). He has published nearly 30 articles in the Journal of Insurance Medicine.

The Hartford was the first insurer in the nation to offer standard rates on life insurance to women recovering from early stage breast cancer and men who have been successfully treated for localized prostate cancer. The company recently instituted changes in the way it assesses the health and longevity of applicants and said that it expects the changes to reduce the cost of premiums for a quarter of all new policyholders.
