Toshiba's New Glasses-Free Ultrahigh-Definition 2D-3D Switching Display
(RTTNews) - Toshiba Corp. (TOSYY.PK, TOSBF.PK) on Saturday said it has developed glasses-free 3D displays that have 4K ultra high definition with work still in progress.
Toshiba said the new technology will not require users to wear dedicated 3D glasses that use a low-crosstalk1, high-definition LCD GRIN lens2 with a 15-inch 4K LCD panel3.
The technology is also credited with a highly portable, compact display that can switch between 3D mode with high-definition resolution and 2D mode with ultrahigh-definition 4K resolution.
The new portable display enables users to switch between 4K UHD 2D and high-resolution 3D mode, while obviating the need for reducing the image brightness in 3D mode and does not deteriorate the 2D image quality.
The 3D display can also function as a 2D display to view 2D images, which is very important for mobile devices. Toshiba believes there is a "high demand for a product that allows users to easily switch between high-quality 3D and ultrahigh- definition 2D without any need for an additional display."
Toshiba in a statement said the new technology is indicated with a lens system that "reduces the abnormal alignment of liquid crystal molecules near the boundaries of liquid crystal lens, reducing crosstalk to 2%, against 5% in conventional 3D displays. This is achieved by optimizing the orientation of the liquid crystal molecules and the angle of the liquid crystal GRIN lens relative to the direction of polarization of the liquid crystal panel.
Toshiba added that "by combining this technology with a 15-inch 4K LCD panel, 3D resolution has been increased more than fivefold4, making it possible to view high-quality 3D images on the same display used for ultrahigh-definition 2D images."
Looking ahead, the electronic giant plans to fuse the new technology that can be applied to any screen size and position, and aims for commercialization in B2B industrial and medical products.
Toshiba expects the new display to be unveiled at the 2015 International Consumer Electronics Show to be held in Las Vegas from January 6-9, 2015.
TOSBF.PK last traded at $4.28, up $0.06 or 1.3%.
