TRC Wins $1.4 Million Archeological Recovery Contract with U.S. Bureau of Land Management
The Cultural and Natural Resources Practice of TRC Companies, Inc. (NYSE: TRR) today announced it has won a $1.4 million archaeological data recovery project with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in Amarillo, Texas.
The project will help the BLM complete the transfer of its 331-acre ranch in Amarillo to the Girl Scouts of Texas Oklahoma Plains Inc. For more than 40 years, the Girl Scouts have leased the ranch – also known as the Landis Property – for use as a campground and outdoor recreation facility. Now, the BLM plans to donate the ranch to the Girl Scouts as a place of their own.
"TRC is conducting archaeological excavations on the property that will help the Texas Historic Commission fill in some key information about the cultural prehistory of the Panhandle,” said Leslie Theiss, manager of the BLM's Amarillo Field Office. "I'm thrilled that the company is involving Girl Scouts in this effort so they can share in the excitement of discovery and also learn about prehistoric Native Americans.”
Before the BLM can transfer government-owned land to a private organization, the Texas Historic Commission, under federal historic preservation laws, requires the BLM to conduct a proper archaeological investigation to extract any significant cultural resources or artifacts from the property.
"Environmental and cultural history is so vital to understanding our heritage and resources,” said Howard Higgins, TRC’s Cultural and Natural Resources Practice leader. "When you look at different fragments of America’s cultural resources and conduct data recovery, you really gain insight into how people and cultures before us have used natural resources. Environmental history teaches us what we should be looking at in the future based on the lessons learned from the past.”
"The Girl Scouts of Texas Oklahoma Plains are thrilled to be a part of this exciting project,” said Becky Burton, CEO of Girl Scouts of Texas Oklahoma Plains. "The Girl Scout program gives girls opportunities to develop their leadership potential. The program encourages girls to Discover, Connect and Take Action. This project is an excellent opportunity for girls to discover the past, connect with it and learn about what they can do to make it a part of their lives. We are looking forward to working together.”
In 2007, under an existing five-year contract with the BLM, TRC determined the nature and extent of identified archaeological sites on the Landis Property and recommended data recovery at three significant locations within those sites. The work will make substantive contributions to the understanding of human life ways in the panhandle of Texas during the past 2000 years.
