US Regulators: Volkswagen's Emission Troubles Have Broadened

(RTTNews) - U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said that German car giant Volkswagen AG (VKW.L, VLKAF.PK, VOW.BE) told regulators this week that another 75,000 diesel vehicles sold in the U.S. contain software that government officials have said can evade emissions tests.

California Air Resources Board said that Volkswagen Group of America submitted a recall plan responding to the violations described in ARB's September 18, 2015 letter to VW concerning illegal defeat devices in their 2-liter diesel-powered vehicles, model years 2009-2015.

This submission initiates a review by ARB of up to 20 business days of all elements of the plan. Based on ARB's review, VW may be required to revise and resubmit all, or specific elements of the recall plan. ARB will also consult with U.S. EPA during this process to develop a national recall plan.

The Environmental Protection Agency and California Air Resources Board said on Friday that all 2009-2016 Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche diesel models with 3.0 liter engines contain software regulators previously alleged could dupe emissions tests, a violation of U.S. and state clean-air laws.

VW and Audi officials responded to those concerns and told EPA and CARB that the issues raised in the In-Use Compliance letter extend to all 3.0 liter diesel engines from model years 2009 through 2016. Based on this information, EPA and CARB will continue to investigate and take all appropriate action under their respective authorities.
