Young Broadcasting Inc. Announces Results of Its Free Time Campaign Initiative
Young Broadcasting Inc. ("YBI”) (NASDAQ:YBTVA) today announced that 72 candidates participated in its political campaign initiative during the midterm elections, taking advantage of 240 minutes of free, issue-oriented air-time on the newscasts of YBI’s ten broadcast stations. As part of this initiative, political statements by participating candidates ran on multiple newscasts, as well as in elections specials and on station Web sites. Under the policy, all ten broadcast stations in YBI’s station group allowed candidates in key races to give an unedited response to an issue or multiple issues chosen by the television stations. The stations gave these responses set time limits, which varied from 50-60 seconds, depending on the station. The offer applied to federal (Senate and House of Representatives), state and local races, at the discretion of each station. This opportunity has been well received by candidates such as Dianne Feinstein, California senator, who in a recent letter to YBI’s San Francisco station said, "The public needs and deserves to have a chance during the election season to hear from candidates in an unedited format. In recording and airing these public service announcements, KRON4 is doing something that I don’t believe any other station in California has done for the November 7, 2006 election.” "YBI takes seriously its obligation to bring candidates’ views to the public,” remarked Vincent Young, Chairman of YBI. "Our stations provide extensive coverage of political races as part of our award winning local newscasts. We believe that our "Free Time” initiative provides candidates with a valuable platform to explain their positions directly to voters.” Mr. Young also noted that, for the fourth consecutive election cycle, YBI stations’ gross political billings exceeded $30 million. YBI expects that total political spending in 2006 will be about $31.6 million.
