New York, May 21, 2014 -- When countries break up or regions of a country gain independence or autonomy from foreign occupation, history points to an increased risk of a sovereign default, according to a report by Moody's Investors Service. Seventy-five percent of the 17 country break-ups observed since 1983 were accompanied by a sovereign default by either the former or the new state.
