2009 US Open Powered by Wind Energy from Constellation NewEnergy
Constellation Energy (NYSE: CEG) today announced that its subsidiary, Constellation NewEnergy, will supply renewable wind energy certificates (RECs) to the United States Tennis Association for the 2009 US Open. Approximately 2,000 Green-e certified wind RECs will match the electricity consumed at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center over the duration of the US Open held Aug. 31-Sept. 13, 2009.
"The USTA’s continued use of clean, renewable energy at the US Open illustrates that there are opportunities for organizations to make their operations greener and more sustainable,” said Michael Kagan, president of Constellation NewEnergy. "Constellation NewEnergy is proud of its three year energy supply relationship with the United States Tennis Association and US Open.”
"Renewable energy certificates give us an ability to both improve the sustainability of the US Open and highlight the use of renewable energy to a worldwide audience,” said Danny Zausner, managing director, USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
A REC represents the environmental benefits of electricity generated from wind, solar or other renewable power facilities. The RECs that Constellation NewEnergy will be supplying to the US Open were generated by the Steel Winds wind farm located in Lackawanna, New York. Organizations may use RECs to reduce their indirect greenhouse gas emissions and help support the operation and development of domestic sources of cleaner, renewable energy.
