Eaton's $65 Million Contract from IdleAire Will Cut Diesel Truck Idling Emissions and Save Fuel
Eaton's Power Truss(TM) system, a key component of IdleAire's ATEAdvanced Travel Center Electrification (R) system, will be deployed at210 truck stops and fleet terminals nationwide that are planned duringthe next 12 months. IdleAire's system equips long-haul drivers withsubstitute power so they can turn off their diesel engines duringrequired rest stops, eliminating 100 percent of idling emissions.IdleAire said a truck using its system consistently for one year wouldsave 3,366 gallons of fuel. The benefits of this technology increaseexponentially when all long-haul trucks use the system, IdleAire said, resulting in a potential savings of 4.4 billion gallons each year.
The IdleAire(R) system also improves a truck driver's workenvironment by delivering filtered in-cab heating and airconditioning, and power for communications, entertainment (Internetand television) and training.
"With escalating fuel costs, tightening emissions requirements andhighway safety issues, our partnership with IdleAire yields animmediate and long-term solution to the trucking industry thataddresses air quality, fuel conservation and training issues," saidRandy Carson, Eaton senior vice president and president - ElectricalGroup. "Additionally, we're thrilled to contribute to an advancementthat substantially improves the quality of life for our nation's truckdrivers as they transport more than 80 percent of our nation's goods."
A leader in both the electrical and trucking industries, Eaton hasbeen a key design partner with IdleAire and co-developed the PowerTruss(TM) system that distributes electrical power to each individualtruck parking space. In this initial nationwide deployment, Eaton'sPower Truss(TM) system will energize more than 13,200 parking spacesthat are planned, utilizing Cutler-Hammer(R) branded automation, powerdistribution and control products.
In January, IdleAire announced the completion of $320 million infinancing to fund its first major growth phase. IdleAire said it hasobtained agreements for drivers' use of the IdleAire(R) system frommore than 1,500 fleets in the United States and Canada, representingsignificant growth opportunities across North America beyond theinitial 15-month deployment.
"Our ability to complete this financing speaks volumes about thestrength of our business model as well as our confidence in strategicpartners like Eaton," said Mike Crabtree, chief executive officer ofIdleAire Technologies Corp. "Eaton has the manufacturing andengineering size, scale and expertise to support this exciting growthstage for our company."
