The report found that intelligent buildings are increasingly enabled by the Internet of Things (IoT) and made functional by the ongoing convergence of operational and information technology systems. A host of new elements, such as the cloud, remote access, data sharing and analytics, in addition to connected and shared networks, have changed how built environments are operated. Exposure to advanced threats however has been downplayed and undervalued for a long time. After witnessing a recent number of security breaches, stakeholders within the intelligent building industry have begun to recognize the potentially damaging impact that cyber threats pose to the industry and the built environment.
Consequently, CABA's study undertook a detailed evaluation of the state of cybersecurity in intelligent buildings, which included: a value proposition evaluation for cybersecurity solutions, along with stakeholder analyses via in-depth interviews and directed surveys that led to an assessment of future market directions with specific recommendations.
"Advances in connectivity and evolving technology, which includes the Internet of Things, continues to change the trajectory of intelligent buildings, thus raising the need for protection against cyber threats," stated Ronald J. Zimmer, CABA President & CEO. "Our report is a very important roadmap that focused on how to address cyber threats that could potentially destabilize enterprises that depend on intelligent building operations."
CABA members that participated in CABA's "Intelligent Buildings and Cybersecurity" project included: Acuity Brands, Inc., Bodvoc Ltd., Cadillac Fairview Corporation, CSA Group, Honeywell International, Inc., Hydro-Québec, Ingersoll Rand, Intel Corporation, ISA Security Compliance Institute, Johnson Controls, Manulife Real Estate/John Hancock Real Estate, Philips, Robert Bosch LLC, Rogers Communications Inc., Schneider Electric, Siemens Industry, Inc., Tridium, Inc., United Technologies Building & Industrial Systems and Waterfall Security Solutions. All participants found the project useful, and both Schneider Electric and Philips Lighting gave the project and the process high praise.
"Suffice it to say that given the ever increasing level of malicious cyber activity, Schneider Electric views understanding and addressing the cyber security needs and expectations of intelligent buildings customers, as well as all the markets we serve as being very important. This study helps to provide us that understanding," said Michael Pyle, CSSLP, Schneider Electric, Partner Business, VP Cyber Security.
"Commercial building systems are becoming more intelligent, interconnected and data-rich participants in the Internet of Things. As such, Philips views very seriously the future potential threat of cyberattacks targeting this new intelligent-building domain. This landmark study is perfectly timed to give the most up-to-date insight on the state of the cybersecurity industry, the nature of potential attacks and mitigating strategies to be considered," said Mark Pacelle, Sr. Director, Open Innovation, North America at Philips Lighting.
