Chevy Unveils New Bolt Electric Car

(RTTNews) - Chevrolet on Wednesday unveiled the production version of its Chevrolet Bolt electric car at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

General Motors' CEO Mary Barra unveiled the Bolt and said the vehicle's combination of technology and affordability would help push electric vehicles into the mainstream.

The all-electric Bolt EV has an estimated range of 200 miles on a single charge and comes at an affordable price, according to GM.

The car has a 240-volt charging unit that can provide up to an average of 25 miles of range per hour of charge and will fully replenish the battery in about nine hours.

The car's price would come in below $30,000 after the federal tax credit of $7,500 for electric car purchases is factored in. The Bolt is intended to appeal to consumers looking at a more affordable price tag than the market-leading Tesla Motors Inc. (TSLA)'s electric cars.

Valuable information like battery levels, range estimation, charge settings and climate controls is readily available on the standard 10.2-inch center touchscreen and 8-inch diagonal driver cluster.

The vehicle will have OnStar 4G LTE connectivity, which will turn the car into a WiFi hotspot that offers access to apps and services. The Bolt will be compatible with various connected platforms such as Apple CarPlay and Google's Android Auto.

The vehicle also includes a rear camera mirror, which projects a wide-range view of the area behind the vehicle in the inside rearview mirror.

The mirror surface doubles as a video screen and provides the driver with a full, high-resolution view, enabling drivers to see behind them even if their view is blocked by passengers.

The Bolt EV, which would be a step beyond GM's Volt plug-in hybrid, will not be available until late 2016.
