Cognex Machine Vision Selected by Leading Commercial Printer

    Business Editors

NATICK, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 28, 2005--Cognex Corporation (NASDAQ: CGNX), the world's leading supplier of machine vision systems, announced today that a major commercial printer in the U.S. will use Cognex In-Sight(R) ID readers to identify printed sheets and ensure alignment during printing. The order, which is in excess of $700,000, is one of the largest purchase orders for In-Sight to date.
The In-Sight ID readers will be used to read 2D Data Matrix codes marked on sheets of paper, which will enable the printer to automatically identify each unique sheet and which press printed it. In the event of a printing problem, misprinted sheets can be quickly identified and retrieved. Operators will also be able to determine which press was responsible for the misprint so that process corrections can be made. In addition to code reading, the customer will use Cognex vision to check for misfed sheets in order to increase the efficiency of the operation. Both applications will enable the printer to lower the overall cost of printing.
"The number and variety of commercial applications for Cognex machine vision continue to expand," said Dr. Robert J. Shillman, Chairman and CEO of Cognex. "This very significant order from the printing industry is another indication that more manufacturers across a wide range of industries are recognizing the value of machine vision for error-proofing production and achieving critical cost savings."
