Eaton Improves Performance of Ward's Top 10 Engine Winners
Business Editors/Automotive Writers
North American International Auto Show 2005
SOUTHFIELD, Mich.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 12, 2005--Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation (NYSE:ETN) is helping power half of the world's top engine programs as chosen by Ward's Auto World magazine and announced today at the North American International Auto Show.
Eaton intake and exhaust engine valves are used in the following honored engines for 2005: Audi A6 - FSI 3.2L DOHC V-6, Audi A4 - 4.2L DOHC V-8, Chrysler 300C - Hemi Magnum 5.7L OHV V-8, Ford Mustang GT - 4.6L SOHC V-8 and the GM - Vortec 4.2L DOHC I-6.
"It's an honor to be chosen as a partner by the teams that create these powertrains and we're pleased to see our customers getting credit for their hard work," said Scott King, vice president, sales and marketing for Eaton's automotive group.
For more than 10 years the editors at Ward's Auto World have set out to select the best regular-production engines available in the U.S. market that have a base price of under $52,500. This year's winning engines, selected from 36 nominations, highlight fuel-saving features.
"Fuel-saving technology is a key design priority for many of the winners," said Bill Visnic, Ward's senior technical editor. "Cylinder deactivation is a notable feature as is direct gasoline injection, hybridization and diesels."
Cylinder deactivation provides fuel-efficiency of up to 8% by reducing the number of cylinders engaged in the combustion process. Eaton's electro-hydraulic cylinder deactivation system interacts with the vehicle's electronic controller to deactivate four cylinders of a V8. The cylinder deactivation process can occur several times in the course of a mile without any perceived change by the driver or any noticeable valve train noise.
One of Eaton's innovative valve train systems is the ULV(R) engine valve which makes engines more productive by reducing reciprocating mass that robs power to the flywheel, thereby producing the power of a larger engine.
Eaton Corporation is a diversified industrial manufacturer with 2003 sales of $8.1 billion. Eaton is a global leader in fluid power systems and services for industrial, mobile and aircraft equipment; electrical systems and components for power quality, distribution and control; automotive engine air management systems and powertrain controls for fuel economy; and intelligent truck drivetrain systems for fuel economy and safety.
