GM Reveals U.S. Probe Into Nearly 1 Mln Vehicles After Recall Fixes Fail

(RTTNews) - General Motors Co. (GM) said on Friday that the U.S. regulators have launched an engineering analysis into about 997,743 of its vehicles after reports of engine failure even following recall remedies.

The probe by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Office of Defects Investigation or ODI covers GM models from 2021 to 2026 equipped with the L87 engine.

The investigation follows Recall Query RQ26001, opened in January 2026, to assess the effectiveness of Recall 25V-274. GM had cited a supplier manufacturing and quality issue as the root cause of failures in engines produced between March 2021 and May 2024.

GM's recall remedy involved either an oil viscosity change or complete engine replacement, depending on inspection results. But ODI said it continues to receive reports of failures after these repairs.

To date, ODI has received 499 complaints of post-remedy engine failure in vehicles subject to Recall 25V-274, including 473 after oil viscosity changes and 26 after engine replacements. It also received 191 reports of failures in engines produced after the recall's cited production period. GM itself reported 6,953 complaints of post-remedy engine failure.

The agency said it is expanding the scope of the engineering analysis to include engines produced after May 2024.

On the NYSE, shares of General Motors are currently gaining 1.95 percent, changing hands at $87.83.
