Innodata Isogen Teams with Lockheed Martin to Deploy Technical Documentation System for F-35 Lightning II

When the first Low Rate Initial Production (LRIP) F-35 Lightning II, also known as the Joint Strike Fighter, rolls off the production line and delivers in 2010, it will feature a full array of sophisticated military technology. Pilots and technicians operating and maintaining the F-35 will be supported by Joint-Service Technical Data (JTD) Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETM) authored in a highly sophisticated technical documentation system. The Virtually Integrated System for Technical Data Authoring Tool Suite (VISTA) was a collaborative developmental effort between Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Co. and Innodata Isogen. As the Air System Contractor (ASC), Lockheed Martin leads a task force of aerospace and defense companies in the development of three variants of the F-35. The first of the variants, the conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL), took its inaugural flight December 15, 2006. The three variants of the next-generation fighter will become the primary aircraft for three U.S. Armed Forces branches, Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps, along with eight allied countries, including Great Britain, the Netherlands and Italy. The first F-35’s will enter the United States Marine Corps initial operational capability (IOC) in 2012, with subsequent IOC schedules for delivery to the Navy and the United States Air Force shortly thereafter. The F-35 VISTA Authoring Tool Suite is an advanced technical documentation system that integrates management workflows, digital asset management tools, user interfaces and a host of supporting applications. The system provides data for pilots and maintainers, current, detailed, configuration specific user-interactive access to F-35 IETM’s. VISTA supplies the tools to develop, deliver and manage large volumes of JTD in XML format. It provides collaborative remote authoring capabilities to support F-35 team members; Northrop Grumman in California, Pratt and Whitney in Connecticut and other key team partners located outside of the Fort Worth LM AERO facility. F-35 JTD is delivered via the Autonomic Logistics Information System (ALIS) for worldwide distribution to the end-user in a web-enabled environment. The Innodata Isogen / Lockheed Martin technical data team recognized the challenges associated with the development of a system to support multiple F-35 variants and unique hardware and software modifications for each customer. While most of the F-35’s features are common across three air vehicle platforms, each F-35 configuration, military branch or international partner will require unique technical data support. "A key feature to F-35 VISTA is the technical data applicability model, managing unique configuration / maturity differences for each F-35,” said Kate McDonald, VP of Innodata Isogen’s Aerospace & Defense practice. "This model supports the reuse of technical data and helps F-35’s Autonomic Logistics Information System (ALIS) Supportability System provide end users with configuration-specific data on demand at the point of use.” To achieve that goal, Innodata Isogen deployed a Content Management System (CMS) that manages structured documents and supports collaborative data creation among various work groups. As a next step, the team integrated a Digital Asset Manager (DAM) with the CMS to manage the large volume of graphics, multi-media, and standard re-useable library items. This also included a link management application that ensures link integrity between multiple modules and related training materials. Finally, the Innodata Isogen and Lockheed Martin technical data team developed an integrated workflow application to create and track processes for creating, authoring, reviewing and delivering content for the F-35 IETM’s. F-35 VISTA bundles together all components and makes them transparent to end users, enabling authors and engineers to create data, incorporate links, make editorial changes and then publish that within a single set of interfaces. Team leaders from Innodata Isogen will deliver a presentation on F-35 VISTA Authoring Tool Suite at the Aerospace Industry Association (AIA) Joint Services Technical Publications Workshop in Clearwater Beach, Florida, on May 10, 2007.
