Kopin Announces Availability of Golden-iTM Developer Kits

Kopin® Corporation (Nasdaq: KOPN), the largest U.S. manufacturer of micro displays for consumer, industrial and military applications, today announced the availability of Golden-iTM headset Software Developer Kits (SDK) for field testing the hands-free headset computing device.

Currently in its third generation, Golden-i is a lightweight (3 to 6 ounce), wireless Bluetooth/WiFi headset with a near-eye, 15-inch virtual PC display. This unique device, whose form-factor design was led by Motorola, provides users for the first time with the ability to wirelessly command and control up to seven independent devices and networks such as cellular phones, PCs and company servers – all by natural speech recognition. Users can access all Internet services while highly mobile, including full-color D-1 (720 x 480p x 30 fps) streaming video over standard Bluetooth 2.1, WiFi and host cellular devices.

"Golden-i offers spontaneous mobile access to virtually any digital information in the world, on-demand,” said Jeffrey Jacobsen, Kopin Senior Advisor to CEO and Golden-i Program Manager. "Imagine leaving your laptop at the office and still having full access to all of its information, applications and services while traveling. Golden-i is an enterprise mobility and performance product that will truly change the way people work and live.”

With a single spoken command, Golden-i’s hands-free mobile computing technology establishes an encrypted Bluetooth, WiFi or cellular link with other remote devices, for example a remote hibernating Microsoft Windows 7 PC. When a wireless link is established, Golden-i users immediately see their PC desktop screen and can use natural speech recognition to access all of the PC’s applications, data files and services. When finished, the PC can be placed back in hibernation with just one spoken command.

The Golden-i developer kit comes with a complete, open-access SDK that gives end-users the option of developing their own software to either operate on Golden-i units directly or remotely running on PCs, industrial equipment or other devices. The kit makes it easy to develop highly-intelligent applications that provide the Golden-i wearer with information from, and control of, virtually any "connected” device on the planet. Golden-i currently operates in English, French, German and Spanish natural voice recognition but will soon operate seamlessly in over 20 common languages.

"The global availability of our developer kits is a crucial milestone in bringing this mobile technology to market,” said Dr. John C. C. Fan, CEO of Kopin. "We’re looking forward to hearing how organizations deploy Golden-i and how this one device improves employee performance and safety in their business.”

Kopin has been working with leading technology companies to develop Golden-i: Motorola, Microsoft, Texas Instruments, MuRata Electronics, Nuance Communications, Stonestreet One, Mistral Solutions, Ittiam Software, Aurisound, Adeneo Embedded, Hillcrest Labs, Micron Semiconductor and Ikanos.

"We are working with Kopin to research and identify new business opportunities in wearable computing,” said Tom Bianculli, Emerging Business, Chief Technology Office, Motorola Enterprise Mobility Solutions business. "As the leader in the enterprise mobile computing space, Motorola is always looking for opportunities to help our customers gain a competitive advantage and make their mobile workforce more productive.”

Motorola is well-known for its best-in-class industrial design expertise and leading patent portfolio in handheld mobile computing. Together Motorola and Kopin are working to research the viability for hands-free mobile communications systems in various outdoor field environments.

"Golden-i truly demonstrates how impactful speech technology can be in a variety of mobile environments, particularly hands-free headset computing. This implementation is among the most innovative we’ve seen, allowing the mobile workforce to complete a variety of critical tasks from just about anywhere,” said Michael Thompson, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Nuance Mobile.

Nuance’s VoCon3200 speech recognition and Vocalizer text-to-speech software were chosen by Kopin for their accuracy, speed and multiple spoken language support. Kopin modified the VoCon3200 speech recognition application, adding an active speaker self-learning algorithm that studies the speaker’s unique pronunciation of vowels, consonants and syllables.

Jacobsen concluded, "It’s difficult to even comprehend the many capabilities, features and possible uses for Golden-i without experiencing it firsthand.” Demonstrations of the device will be held at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain (February 15-18, 2010) at the Motorola booth (#8A51) in Hall 8.
