Momentum Builds for Viisage Border Management Solutions in Europe; The Netherlands Employs Viisage Identity Solution to Meet European Union and ICAO Standards for Secure Border Crossing

    Business Editors/High-Tech Editors

BILLERICA, Mass. & BOCHUM, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 14, 2005--Viisage (Nasdaq:VISG) today announced that The Netherlands has successfully piloted a Viisage identity solution to support critical secure border crossing initiatives. The program complies with European Union and International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards for securing borders, and further demonstrates innovative solutions for tighter control of European borders.
In The Netherlands, the Ministry of Interior has initiated the project to ensure all Netherlands passports are both authentic and uniquely tied to the person holding the passport. For this solution, the Ministry of Interior selected Viisage's face recognition ISO enrollment technology, which is developed based on the International Standards Organization (ISO) recommendations. Viisage's technology is being used to ensure acquired passport applicants' images comply with the mandatory ISO standard for both printing on the document as well as storage on the chip embedded in the passport. Additionally, Viisage's face recognition technology is used to compare the live image of the applicant against the image stored on the chip to confirm the tie between the individual and the document. The complete solution, which is coordinated through SDU Identification, a European integration firm focused on high-end passports, also includes fingerprint biometrics along with Viisage's face recognition. Prototype passports will be issued to 15,000 volunteers and the solution will test the passport registration, production, and issuance.
"Nations around the world are re-evaluating border security, particularly in Europe where new guidelines and regulations require the recommended ISO standard. Countries such as The Netherlands and Pakistan are at the forefront of implementing superior solutions to the challenges of border security and we are proud to be an important part of these initiatives," said Bernard Bailey, president and CEO of Viisage. "Viisage has increasingly become a company which customers turn to for the breadth of solutions that help solve critical identity recognition and verification issues."
