New Class-D Amplifiers from Analog Devices Deliver Audiophile Sound Qu
Business Editors
NORWOOD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 27, 2005--
-ADI introduces new family of Class-D amplifiers optimized with
best-in-class audio performance and EMI reduction.
Raising the bar for high performance in consumer audio systems, Analog Devices Inc. (NYSE: ADI) today introduced a family of audio amplifiers that will enable the design of high performance audio in the smallest possible space to resolve design challenges in consumer applications, such as HDTV, home theatre, and car stereo systems. These new amplifiers combine the space- and heat-saving advantages of Class-D amplification, with dramatic improvements in sound quality and reduced EMI (electro magnetic interference) in a one-chip solution.
"New consumer electronics applications, especially advanced TVs, are designed as much for their aesthetic appeal as their audio/video performance. Class-D, with its inherent space and heat advantages, is a critical enabling technology in this revolution," said Dick Meaney, vice president of the precision converter group at Analog Devices. "Analog Devices' new audio amplifiers take Class-D technology to the next level without compromising sound quality. In addition, because these devices lead the industry in high performance and EMI reduction, they are the best choice for audio amplification in the demanding car stereo market."
Developed using ADI's patent-pending Sigma-Delta technology, the devices achieve less than 0.005 percent THD (total harmonic distortion) and up to 2 x 40 Watt high output power, while reducing heat loss by 50 percent - a breakthrough in performance that is unattainable using traditional Class-D architectures.
"Audio experts at Analog Devices devised a way to outperform competing PWM-based (pulse width modulation) Class-D schemes by using a highly-integrated single-chip design which features a 'high modulation factor' Sigma-Delta architecture, configured in a closed-loop implementation with a high power output stage," said Bob Adams, ADI fellow and manager of audio development at Analog Devices.
Ultimately, this enables higher audio fidelity in half the space of competing devices as well as a significant reduction in EMI to meet the design requirements of next-generation electronics, such as thin flat panel TVs and multichannel surround sound car stereos.
The AD199x amplifiers can be combined with other Analog Devices audio products, including ADCs (analog-to-digital converters), DACs (digital-to-analog converters) and CODECs, as well as its SigmaDSP(R) and SHARC(R) audio processors.
