Powerwave Introduces MicroFlex(TM) Cabinets, Providing Rigorous Protection of Wireless Infrastructure in a Small Footprint
Powerwave Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:PWAV), a global source for
end-to-end wireless infrastructure solutions, introduced its MicroFlex™
cabinets to house and protect wireless infrastructure components today
at CTIA Wireless 2008, the industry’s premier
wireless conference and exhibition.
With outside dimensions measuring 30W x 30H x 84D, and weighing in at
150lbs, the MicroFlex cabinets are built to accommodate small lease
spaces. Powerwave’s MicroFlex cabinets further
extend Powerwave’s growing line-up of
cell-site enclosure solutions, which also include 7- and 9-bay VersaFlex™
above-ground shelters, and the VersaFlex Vault (CEV) underground shelter
system.
Among the key characteristics that set Powerwave’s
MicroFlex cabinet apart from competitive solutions is its flexible,
modular design and industry-leading thermal management capabilities.
Interchangeable front and back access doors feature field changeable
door hinges for left or right access configurations, and enable
customers to choose from several cooling options including a DC-powered
heat exchanger; encapsulated phase change material (PCM) using a
proprietary liquid/solid product that has been chemically modified to
melt above 84º F (29º
C) to absorb heat and then recharge by solidification when the
temperature falls below 84º F; or, thermal
electric cooling that supports below ambient cooling without a
compressor for sensitive sites with noise restrictions.
The MicroFlex cabinet also features an emergency ventilation system that
automatically switches from AC power to DC cooling mode in the absence
of utility power. This Filtered Free Cooling solution utilizes
semi-permeable expanded Teflon membrane technology to eliminate all
water from wind driven rain, as well as protect against salt fog for
coastal deployments. The Filtered Free Cooling solution can also be
utilized as a complete thermal management option where below ambient
conditions are not necessary.
The above mentioned thermal management capabilities afforded by Powerwave’s
MicroFlex cabinets not only provide cooling power ranging from 450 BTUs
to 36,000 BTUs, but can also help to reduce a cell site’s
capital expenditures. For example, operators choosing to house their
indoor-rated radio equipment inside Powerwave’s
MicroFlex cabinet may experience up to 20 percent cost savings as
compared to the purchase of the same outdoor-rated OEM radio equipment.
The modular, multi-purpose MicroFlex enclosures can assist wireless
operators in complying with the Federal Communications Commission’s
new mandate for eight hours of back-up power. In response to this
mandate, the MicroFlex enclosures are designed to house a variety of
cell-site components including power supplies, fuel cells and a wide
array of battery configurations. All power options insure hydrogen
safety with passive ventilation through a semi-permeable Teflon membrane.
The MicroFlex cabinets are also ideal for housing multi-carrier power
amplifiers (MCPAs), and other wireless infrastructure components
supporting other technologies such as WiMAX. The cabinets can be
deployed individually, or daisy-chained together, based on operator’s
requirements.
In addition to wireless infrastructure equipment, the MicroFlex cabinet’s
industry-standard form factor can also house any Electronic Industries
Association (EIA) 19-inch or 23-inch standard equipment, further
extending the flexibility of the cabinet, and enabling operators to
diversify their operations by housing lightweight mobile data center
equipment.
"Our entry into the small enclosure market
represents a continued commitment to developing wireless infrastructure
solutions that can be tailored to meet a wide variety of customer
requirements,” said Ronald J. Buschur,
President and Chief Executive Officer, Powerwave Technologies. "The
introduction of the MicroFlex cabinet also further extends our ability
to help wireless operators make the most from their existing real estate
portfolios with a smaller form factor that can free up space needed to
provide potential new revenue streams.” About Powerwave Technologies
