Renesas Technology Introduces 80MHz Microcontrollers with Performance

That Can Perform Simultaneous Conversions and I2C Support.
Renesas Technology America, Inc. today announced the 80MHz 32-bit SH7080 series microcontrollers (MCUs) that deliver up to 104 MIPS (million instructions per second), very high performance, about 60 percent higher than older 50MHz SH7144 series devices. Additionally, the SH7080 series MCUs offer greater on-chip flash memory and more and better on-chip peripheral functions. In particular, an enhanced multifunction timer unit (MTU2) supports 3-phase pulse width modulation (PWM) outputs at the full 80MHz speed, and the on-chip A/Ds achieve a fast 2.5-microsecond conversion time and can perform simultaneous conversions. The devices support an I2C link for networking and have a Synchronous Serial Communication Unit (SSU).
The four new devices -- SH7083, SH7084, SH7085 and SH7086 -- deliver the over 100 MIPS throughput and the high peripheral functionality required for industrial products such as inverters and AC servos. The devices are also optimized for enhanced office automation equipment and consumer devices such as improved networked home appliances, digital audio/video products, and liquid-crystal slide projectors.
Fast A/D converters operate independently, even simultaneously
Analog signals from external sensors in embedded systems are processed rapidly by the microcontrollers' multiple on-chip 10-bit A/D converters, which support eight or sixteen channels. The SH7083, SH7084, and SH7085 devices have two independent hardware A/Ds, so two analog-to-digital conversions can take place simultaneously. In front of each converter is a 4 channel multiplexer that selects the analog signal to be measured from one of 4 input lines, giving a total of 8 input channels. The 2.5usec conversion speed is twice as fast as the A/Ds in SH7144 series chips, accommodating faster analog signals.
CPU can access flash memory in one clock cycle
For storing sophisticated application programs, they have 512 kilobytes (KB) or 256KB of on-chip flash, built with cutting-edge memory technology that allows single-clock-cycle CPU accesses (as fast as 12.5ns) for fast program execution. The flash can be programmed or reprogrammed when the MCU is mounted on a circuit board. This capability simplifies debugging during system development, facilitates program amendments after product development has been completed, and allows program modifications for specific customers during production, among other benefits. On-chip RAM is 32KB or 16KB.
The comprehensive set of on-chip peripheral functions the SH7080 series devices provide minimizes the complexity of embedded systems. Memory controllers allow direct connection to external memory (burst ROM, synchronous DRAM, etc.). Two easy-to-use multifunction timer pulse units can be configured to simultaneously drive two independent 3-phase motors. In addition, one of the timer units can generate 3-phase PWM at up to 80 MHz, allowing the precise control of motors, inverters and AC servos.
Extensive HW/SW support is available
Renesas provides solid hardware and software support for customers developing embedded systems with SH7080 series MCUs. Two development environments are available: the USB bus-powered E10A-USB emulator, which does not need an external power supply, and the E200F real-time emulator, which has a real-time trace capability at the 80MHz clock speed. For software development, the Renesas High-Performance Embedded Workshop has a complete tool chain with optimized C/C++ compiler. In addition, a large community of third-party suppliers offers many other hardware and software development products and support services.
