SeaWorld Killer Whale Dies From Infection

(RTTNews) - An 18-year-old killer whale has died from a rare infection at SeaWorld's San Antonio park.

The company said she succumbed to a strain of a fungus called Candida.

"We are saddened to share the passing of Unna," SeaWorld said. "Unna had been under the constant care of the SeaWorld veterinary team and outside experts for the past several months."

Animal rights groups have called on SeaWorld to stop keeping the massive whales in captivity.

A critical 2013 documentary 'Blackfish' was about Tilikum, a captive killer whale who was involved in the deaths of three individuals. Backlash from the movie has badly hurt SeaWorld's stock price.

Shortly after today's annoucement, PETA called on SeaWorld "to stop sentencing orcas to miserable lives of deprivation in dismal tanks."
