The Dolan Company CEO to Be Inducted Into Minnesota Business Hall of Fame
The Dolan Company (NYSE:DM), a leading provider of professional services and business information to the legal, financial and real estate sectors in the United States, said today that James P. Dolan, its chairman, president, and chief executive officer, will be named to the Minnesota Business Hall of Fame on Thursday, July 29.
Dolan founded The Dolan Company in 1992 with Cherry Tree Investments. Since then it has grown into a diversified professional services and media company that generated $263 million in revenues in 2009. While the company now owns print and electronic business-to-business titles in 21 markets across the United States, more than two-thirds of its revenues are derived from professional services.
The Hall of Fame awards are administered by Twin Cities Business Magazine, which said that each winner had been "a leader, an agent of change, and a source of inspiration. Each helped create a better world.” With this year’s five honorees, the Minnesota Business Hall of Fame has 61 members.
Other honorees this year are Michael Berman, CEO of Berman Medical and a medical technology entrepreneur; David Frauenshuh, CEO of Frauenshuh Companies, the nation’s largest developer of medical facilities; Richard Knowlton, retired CEO of Hormel Foods Corp. (NYSE: HRL); and John Lindahl, managing general partner of Norwest Equity Partners.
"Jim is one of those rare entrepreneurs who can start a business and continue to grow as a leader as his business grows,” says Tony Christianson, a managing partner at Cherry Tree Investments and a director at The Dolan Company since its inception. "He constantly improves his capabilities, so the business never outgrows him. Working with Jim is both stimulating and great fun, since he challenges everyone around him to grow and improve with him.”
Those thoughts are shared by John Bergstrom of St. Paul-based RiverPoint Investments, who has served as a director of The Dolan Company for the past 18 years. "Jim is an exceptional leader,” said Bergstrom. "He has successfully molded several dozen small acquisitions into what is now a national-scale business services provider of strong reputation and with continuing high growth potential."
Dolan, a journalism graduate of the University of Oklahoma, began his career as a reporter with the San Antonio Express-News, which was later acquired by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. Dolan spent the next 12 years working for News Corp., ultimately based in the company’s New York headquarters as director of its New Media Group.
Dolan later worked on Wall Street in media mergers and acquisitions. The company that Dolan and Cherry Tree launched in 1992 was known for years as Dolan Media Company. The company went public in 2007 and dropped its middle name last May to reflect its broader scope.
Minnesota Business Hall of Fame induction ceremonies, including a gala dinner, are scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 29, at the Minneapolis Hilton.
