ADDING MULTIMEDIA Big League Chew(R) Brings 'The Dream' to Life During National Baseball Hall of Fame Weekend
The Wm. Wrigley Jr. Co. (NYSE:WWY), makers of Big League Chew,
celebrated the induction of baseball legend Cal Ripken, Jr. into the
National Baseball Hall of Fame by holding a bubble blowing contest as
part of the Hall of Fame weekend’s Legends for
Youth Skill Clinic on Friday, July 27. The brand also capped the "Live
the Dream” sweepstakes by hosting the grand
prize winner, eight-year old Sam Ruelas of Fort Worth, Texas, who
enjoyed a weekend in Cooperstown with his family while participating in
a special meet-and-greet with Ripken before Sunday’s
induction ceremony.
The bubble blowing excitement began Friday in advance of the skills
clinic where Big League Chew inventor Rob Nelson gave away pouches of
the bubble gum to those in attendance and rallied the crowd to tap into
their best bubble blowing skills.
"For 30 years, Big League Chew has encouraged
kids to swing for the fences and enjoy the game,”
said Nelson. "It’s
an honor to partner with the National Baseball Hall of Fame to celebrate
the career of a player like Cal Ripken, Jr. who is committed to bringing
the ‘Big League’
dream to kids everywhere.”
Nelson, a relief pitcher for the Portland Mavericks (Class-A) during the
summer of 1977, kicked-off the contest with a short how-to on "the
art of the perfect bubble.” After giving
those in attendance an opportunity to blow their best bubbles, Nelson
selected ten finalists, each of whom were given one shot to prove their
Big League Chew bubble was worthy of recognition. The winning bubble was
11.6 inches.
The induction weekend also marked the conclusion of the "Big
League Chew Live the Dream” promotion, which
awarded a winner and their family a once-in-a-lifetime trip to witness
Ripken’s induction ceremony. The on-pack
sweepstakes included more than 10,000 instant prizes including
autographed Cal Ripken, Jr. baseball cards, trips to Ripken Baseball
camps, memberships to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum,
batting gloves, catching mitts and free packs of Big League Chew.
