Andrew Cable Excels in Independent Testing

Andrew Solutions recently authenticated the superior performance of its smoothwall aluminum cable for wireless networks through independent testing conducted by Telab B.V., a third-party independent laboratory specializing in testing and international certification of electronic, electrical, and machine equipment.

Made by Andrew Solutions, the CommScope, Inc. division that is a global leader in wireless communication systems and products, HELIAX® 2.0 FXL is the first aluminum cable tested by Telab to pass 10 rounds of environmental testing, proving its durability in extreme temperatures. HELIAX FXL’s solid triple-bonded construction also demonstrated superior crush resistance while surpassing or meeting the electrical performance specifications set by Telab for 26 other trials.

"Superior design and construction—that is the message we have been delivering with HELIAX FXL smoothwall for years, which Telab has verified in these independent tests,” said Stan Catey, senior vice president and general manager, Cable Products, Andrew. "Wireless operators around the globe are realizing greater cost-effectiveness, improved flexibility, decreased installation times, less tower loading, and excellent RF performance with HELIAX FXL.”

Telab, the leading test lab in China, conducted multiple stress tests on HELIAX FXL based on the China Communications Standard Association’s YD/T 1092-2004 standard, which defines performance requirements for coaxial cable used in the nation’s wireless communications industry.

Andrew submitted HELIAX FXL to Telab to test the long-term reliability of its cable and as part of its continuing mission to serve the expanding Chinese marketplace with wireless communications system solutions. Major operators worldwide have been trialing and deploying FXL smoothwall aluminum cable for close to a decade with over 48 million feet installed in wireless networks globally. Andrew has seen an approximate 75 percent increase in aluminum cable demand since 2004.

Highlights from the Telab testing include the following:

  • HELIAX FXL successfully passed 10 cycles of rising then decreasing temperatures—from 25 degrees Celsius to 80 degrees and back to 25 degrees—with negligible degradation in attenuation and VSWR (Voltage Standing Wave Ratio), key performance metrics for wireless cable.
  • Andrew cable showed flat panel strength 40 percent higher than expected, proving HELIAX FXL can withstand accidental missteps and not get damaged.
  • HELIAX FXL passed an accelerated salt fog trial, exhibiting the cable’s resistance to corrosion.
  • HELIAX FXL displayed superior results in PIM (Passive InterModulation) testing at the 900 MHz band, exhibiting -163 dBc when the expected range is -140 to -150 dBc. A lower PIM reading means less likelihood of interference signals in the receive band.

HELIAX FXL is Andrew’s high-performing, lower-cost transmission line solution, which generally surpasses the electrical performance of leading copper cables. The solid triple-bonded construction of HELIAX FXL adds crush and tensile strength that far exceeds corrugated cables. Andrew® smoothwall aluminum cable provides maximum RF coverage due to better return loss and attenuation that surpasses or equals leading copper cables. Lighter weight than all-copper cables, HELIAX FXL can help reduce tower loading and freight costs.
