Apple IPhones Likely To Get New OLED Screens In 2017
(RTTNews) - The next iPhone to come out in 2017 may have a much clearer screen. As per reports, the iPhone 7 will use AMOLED technology in their new model, which will also sport a bigger 5.8-inch screen. It was also reported that the suppliers are already preparing for a huge jump in display orders.
Apple, which recently reported lower quarterly sales for the first time in 13 years, needs new features to rekindle growth in demand for the iPhone. The smartphone market is slowing down as consumers take longer to upgrade their handsets. A new screen is likely to help Apple's future growth.
The iPhones usually feature liquid crystal displays or LCD displays, while the new organic light-emitting diode or OLED screen are much better than LCD as it doesn't need a backlight. OLED displays are thinner, use less battery power and have higher contrast providing a higher-definition image. The AM in AMOLED stands for active matrix, indicating a layer of TFT material on top of the OLED.
Samsung's smartphones already come with OLED displays.
Meanwhile, Applied Materials Inc., the biggest maker of machines that manufacture screens, said last week that it has received an almost fourfold leap in orders for equipment to make displays, which reportedly indicates preparations to meet Apple's demand for a new kind of OLED screen.
In the past two months, Apple suppliers including Samsung Electronics Co., LG Display Co. and Foxconn Technology Group-owned Sharp Corp. have announced increased spending on the new display technology. As per Bloomberg data, Apple is the biggest customer for all three companies, with Sharp getting about 20 percent of its revenue, LG Display receiving more than 30 percent and Samsung deriving 4.8 percent.
