Perry Enters Outage for Maintenance Work

NORTH PERRY, Ohio, July 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company (FENOC) announced today that work began over the weekend at the Perry Nuclear Power Plant to replace a motor in the Reactor Recirculation System.

The 20-ton motor is one of two motors in the system that controls the flow of water to the reactor vessel, allowing plant operators to raise and lower reactor power. Late last week, the motor was taken out of service, reducing reactor power to approximately 55 percent. Operators shut down the plant on Friday, June 29, to prepare for the motor replacement. The plant will remain shut down until the work is completed. A spare motor is being prepared for installation.

Routine and preventative maintenance as well as several system inspections also will be performed during the outage to assure continued safe and reliable operation of the Perry Plant.

Perry is owned by Akron, Ohio-based FirstEnergy Corp. , and is operated by FirstEnergy's FENOC subsidiary.
