The Medical Center of Aurora Level II Trauma Center Records Deficiency Free Review

AURORA, Colo., Sept. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- A survey of The Medical Center of Aurora's (TMCA) Level II Trauma Center today resulted in an exceptional finding of "no deficiencies."

The Colorado Department of Health and Environment and the American College of Surgeons jointly conduct the trauma services survey and site visit every three years. The survey evaluates quality of care and coordination of services to manage trauma patients throughout their hospital stay -- from entry through the emergency department to rehabilitation.

At the summary meeting Dr. Frank Mitchell, III, a surveyor from the American College of Surgeons, commented, "We see outstanding collaboration between all the departments that manage the trauma patients and the trauma surgeons at TMCA. There is excellent commitment from the ER nurses and the Intensive Care Unit, and the service provided by radiologists was extraordinary."

Dr. Jim Denton, TMCA Trauma Services Medical Director added, "The findings of the survey team reflect years of commitment and hard work put forth by numerous individuals at TMCA. Developing and maintaining a high-quality Level II trauma center for the City of Aurora is a critical community service. This survey validates that trauma patients receive superior care right in their own community."

TMCA is the only Level II trauma center in the City of Aurora and also serves the rapidly growing Northeast Metro area and I-70 corridor. Of some 70,000 emergency department visits last year nearly 15,000 were trauma victims. TMCA trauma service has a history of managing high-profile cases such as major traffic and industrial accidents as well as personal injuries.

Having high-quality trauma services close to area Emergency Medical Services (EMS) agencies is a tremendous benefit in both access and education, according to Dr. Gilbert Pineda EMS Medical Director for TMCA. "Quality of care from providers in the field where major accidents and injuries occur continues throughout the hospital. TMCA's close relationship and collaboration with EMS agencies contributes to successful outcomes for trauma patients brought to us."

"A trauma survey with no deficiencies is not a common result, and only a few trauma programs achieve this level of excellence, said Sylvia Young, TMCA CEO. "It reflects the attention to quality care built into our Trauma Service and the leadership from Dr. Denton's team over the past 5 years."
