Alcoa Foundation and World Scouting Join Forces in Creating Sustainability Awareness for Future Generations
Today, on World Environment Day, Alcoa Foundation and the World
Organization for the Scout Movement announced a joint program promoting
sustainability awareness through a worldwide environmental educational
Scout program. The program will be initially rolled out in five European
countries and will be funded by a two-year $205,000 grant from Alcoa
Foundation. Key components of this project will be featured at the 21st
World Scout Jamboree scheduled to take place in the UK from July 27 to
August 8, 2007.
"In everything they do it’s
very clear that Scouts have a deep understanding and respect for our
environment,” said Rudi Huber, Alcoa president
European region. "We’re
very happy that we can contribute, through the support of Alcoa
Foundation, in helping these girls and boys to be the leaders of
tomorrow by taking the next step to a more sustainable society.”
Dr. Eduardo Missoni, Secretary General of World Scouting, stated: "This
joint program is an excellent opportunity to learn from each other and
to put best practices in place in some of our largest Scout communities
in Europe. We are very glad to benefit from Alcoa Foundation's knowledge
and network.”
With this funding and involvement of both Alcoa employees and Scout
leaders, World Scouting will develop a sustainability project that will
initially be rolled out in Germany, Hungary, Italy, Switzerland and
the UK, beginning today. The roll out will be done through the National
Scout Organizations in close cooperation with local Alcoa plants. The
program will support the work of the Environment Education Task Team of
the World Organization of the Scout Movement, which is developing a
series of initiatives to enhance its environmental educational program
throughout the world. These developments aim to ensure that the Scouts
of today will be prepared for the environmental challenges they will
face in the future. Some of these educational programs will be
demonstrated through environment workshops at the Global Development
Village at the upcoming World Scout Jamboree in the UK.
