Entergy Awards Environmental Stewardship Grants for 2005

NEW ORLEANS, June 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- From Ivory-billed woodpeckers in Arkansas to Kids Saving the Planet in Vermont, and a recycling program in Texas, the programs funded by Entergy's 2005 Environmental Stewardship grants reflect the varied environmental issues of communities served by Entergy.

Twenty-five projects in Arkansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New York, Vermont and Texas were awarded grants totaling $150,000. See attached document to view a complete list of grant recipients.

In its sixth year, Entergy's Environmental Stewardship Grant program provides support to community-based projects that protect, enhance or preserve the environment.

"Entergy is committed not only to operating our business in a way that is environmentally sustainable, we are also proud to be able to partner philanthropically with groups and organizations that support vital environmental projects in the communities we serve," said Patty Riddlebarger, director of corporate social responsibility for Entergy.

Entergy is recognized as a leader within the utility industry with respect to environmental stewardship. As the nation's sixth largest producer of electricity, the company ranks second lowest in overall air emissions among the country's 10 largest utilities. In 2001, Entergy announced a voluntary greenhouse gas emissions reduction program in coordination with Environmental Defense, a national advocacy group, to develop a program to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and stabilize greenhouse gas emissions at 2000 levels through 2005. The company not only met, but exceeded this target by 20 percent. The company has also implemented a combination of internal actions and investments in emissions reduction projects, and it has established a $25 million Environmental Initiatives Fund to help accomplish its greenhouse gas emission goals through 2005.

Entergy Corporation is an integrated energy company engaged primarily in electric power production and retail distribution operations. Entergy owns and operates power plants with approximately 30,000 megawatts of electric generating capacity, and it is the second-largest nuclear generator in the United States. Entergy delivers electricity to 2.7 million utility customers in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. Entergy has annual revenues of more than $10 billion and approximately 14,000 employees.
