Working Mother Magazine Names Allstate A Great Company for Working Moms
"We salute Allstate for their efforts on behalf of workingmothers, and for making the 100 Best for the 15th time," said CarolEvans, CEO of Working Mother Media. "It is my hope that othercompanies around the country learn from the best and experiencefirst-hand the value of flexibility as a business imperative."
In selecting the companies that applied for this year's list,Working Mother magazine gave particular importance to three areas:flexible scheduling, child-care options and time off for new parents.
Allstate's flexible work arrangement policy encourages managers toeffectively use flexible work arrangements to help meet businessobjectives and employee needs. Many Allstate working moms utilizeflexible work options, such as changes in workday schedule, jobsharing, telecommuting, part-time status and compressed workweeks.
Allstate mom Barbara Flowers, who will be featured in the 100 BestWorking Mother October issue, used flexible work arrangements when hertwo children were under three years of age. "I still wanted to havethe opportunities for promotion and advancement but needed more timeat home with my children. We made some temporary adjustments in myresponsibilities and reduced the amount of traveling I had to make,"said Flowers, Director, Product Operations. "Making the change didn'tlimit my chances for being promoted in the company, which is a fearthat many women have when they make these types of adjustments fortheir families."
Allstate has four company sponsored on-site and near-site childcare centers and has partnerships with four national child careproviders that provide discounts to Allstate employees. At theaccredited Northbrook, Ill. on-site center, school age children can beenrolled in the vacation/holiday care and summer camp programs.Emergency back up care is also available. "We value our working parents and take the time to understandtheir needs," said Joan M. Crockett, senior vice president, humanresources.
