ExxonMobil Joins U.S. EPA SmartWay Transport(R) Partnership
ExxonMobil's participation in the Carrier category will contributeto the Partnership's goal of reducing carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxideand particulate emissions by improving the environmental performanceof freight operations. ExxonMobil operates a fleet of 150company-owned tanker trucks that deliver gasoline products to many ofits Exxon- and Mobil-branded service stations across the U.S.
Carrier members of the SmartWay Partnership agree to measure fleetenvironmental performance using EPA's FLEET -- Freight LogisticsEnvironmental and Energy Tracking -- Performance Model, develop athree-year Action Plan to improve environmental metrics, and providean annual report on Action Plan progress.
"ExxonMobil is pleased to be the first oil company to join theSmartWay Transport Partnership," said Daniel Mueller, U.S. fleetmanager, ExxonMobil Fuels Marketing Company. "This program is anatural fit for the company's emphasis on safety and environmentalperformance. This program parallels ExxonMobil's own commitment toreduce emissions from its truck fleet, reduce truck fuel consumption,and increase fleet operating efficiencies."
"I am pleased to welcome ExxonMobil Fuels Marketing to theSmartWay Transport Partnership," said Margo T. Oge, Director of theOffice of Transportation and Air Quality, EPA. "They are the firstpetroleum company to join the Partnership in a commitment to increasefuel efficiency and make freight-related environmental improvements."
Launched in February 2004, the SmartWay Transport Partnership aimsto achieve fuel savings of up to 150 million barrels of fuel per year.The Partnership brings together major freight shippers, truckingcompanies, railroads, and logistics companies to pursue mutuallybeneficial efficiencies that result in emissions reductions and otherenvironmental improvements, as well as cost savings to the companies.The Partnership currently has just over 300 Partners.
Some of the efficiency measures already being implemented byExxonMobil in its delivery fleet, which are included in the SmartWayTransport Partnership strategies, include:
-- driver training
-- reduced highway speed
-- improved freight logistics
-- idle reduction
-- single wide tires
-- automatic tire inflation systems
-- powertrain efficiency
-- use of low viscosity lubricants (e.g., Mobil 1 and Mobil Delvac motor oils)
-- installing new technologies -- Global Positioning System, on-board computers, stability control
-- automatic manual transmissions
-- improved aerodynamics.
